I needed something for me… and something for other black mothers. Over the years, I have had innumerous conversations with other black mothers and women about life, societal events, our children, specific concerns about our black boys, our careers and everything in between.
Over those same year, I have been continuously encouraged to share my thoughts, nuanced perspectives, advice, tips and resources with others.
“You should write a book!” They said. “I don’t have time for that.” I said.
“You should do a podcast!” They said.” “Again, I don’t have time for that.” I responded.
“Maybe a webinar?” They asked. “Ummm, I don’t like to watch myself… or listening to my voice.” I said. (Hey, I’m working on it (we all have areas of growth)).
… then came the year 2020.
The year of the pandemic, quarantine, masks, untimely deaths of friends and acquaintances due to Covid-19, the seemingly unending releases of videos of black men being murdered, the social and political unrest, and heightened racial tensions.
To me, all bets were off. As a wife of a black man and mother or 2 black boys (1 a grown-ish man and one a young man) I needed to do something. I needed a space to interact with other black mothers and women who would understand the emotions and concerns I was feeling, without me having to explain it. A place where I could find information, resources, books etc. to help me work through all that comes with being who we are and re-inventing who we want to be. Realizing that our roles as black mothers and women will always be nuanced and complex, I knew it was time. I needed to create something for me and something for other black mothers and women. A virtual village to find support, validation, information, advice and perspectives. And with so much out of our control, how to reclaim our roles by living with joy and with intention.
2020 became the year to launch “Motherhood In Black”.
I know little to none about the blogging world, but life is about trying new things, and as Joyce Meyer would say “doing it afraid”. So, here I am, and here you are. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
